Abstract: This article analyzes the social experience of widows, orphans and mutilated soldiers of the Paraguayan War (1864–1870), focusing on the province of Bahia. Based on newspapers of the time, such as O Alabama and O Tempo, and on documents preserved at the Public Archives of the State of Bahia, it seeks to understand how these subjects endured humiliation, abandonment and resentment generated by the war. Instead of reproducing the official narrative centered on victories and heroes, the study recovers forgotten voices and problematizes historiographical silences. Drawing on Pierre Ansart, Walter Benjamin, Jeanne Marie Gagnebin and Tzvetan Todorov, it demonstrates that the war was also an experience of social exclusion and selective memory, in which triumph coexisted with silent defeats.
