Abstract: This study is an excerpt from the research developed in our thesis (Castro, 2022). The objective of this extract is to investigate how students use their knowledge of arithmetic in a task that explores algebraic thinking. Seven students were invited to participate in the research: students in the 8th and 9th years of Elementary School and 1st year of High School. The results were interpreted through the theoretical filter of the Anthropological Theory of Didactics (ATD) in addition to the contribution of authors such as Bosch and Kieran. Previously, it could be said that even for students closest to algebraic thinking, arithmetic was used to justify their procedures.
