The influence of the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine on the course of Coronavirus infection, an integrative literature review
Introdução: Com a instauração e avançar da pandemia do novo coronavírus, o corpo acadêmico voltou seu interesse para uma hipótese já conhecida, a possibilidade de desenvolvimento da imunidade heteróloga por meio da vacinação com a BCG. Além da proteção contra meningite, tuberculose e seus agravos, estuda-se a possibilidade de estender seu efeito protetor para o novo vírus.
Métodos: Realizou-se uma busca de artigos publicados na base de dados PubMed/MEDLINE usando os descritores seguindo a descrição dos termos MeSH/DeCS com as palavras-chave:“BCG”, “BCG vaccine”,“Covid-19”, “SARS-Cov-2”, combinadas entre si pelos termos booleanos OR e AND.
Resultados: Foram encontrados 25 artigos, após a realização de seleção por meio dos critérios de exclusão e inclusão, 06 artigos foram elegidos para serem utilizados na composição desta revisão.
Discussão: Os efeitos da vacina são conhecidos por potencializar a resposta imune inata através de mecanismos epigenéticos, essa capacidade diminui com o passar do tempo e tende a ser menos eficaz em adultos. A aplicação em massa da BCG pode comprometer a distribuição da vacina e interferir na adesão de medidas de isolamento. Os estudos ainda não podem ser considerados conclusivos por ter uma grande quantidade de vieses associados. A falta de ensaios clínicos randomizados ainda não justificam que a aplicação seja feita de forma completamente segura.

Abstract:
Introduction: With the establishment and progress of the new coronavirus pandemic, the academic body turned its interest to a well-known hypothesis, the possibility of developing heterologous immunity through BCG vaccination. In addition to protection against meningitis, tuberculosis and its problems, the possibility of extending its protective effect against the new virus is being studied.
Methods: A search for articles published in the PubMed / MEDLINE database was performed using the descriptors following the description of the MeSH / DeCS terms with the keywords: “BCG”, “BCG vaccine”, “Covid-19”, “ SARS-Cov-2 ”, combined by the Boolean terms OR and AND.
Results: 25 articles were found, after the selection was made using the exclusion and inclusion criteria, 06 articles were chosen to be used in the composition of this review.
Discussion: The effects of the vaccine are known to enhance the innate immune response through epigenetic mechanisms, this capacity decreases over time and tends to be less effective in adults. The mass application of BCG can compromise the distribution of the vaccine and interfere with the adhesion of isolation measures. The studies cannot yet be considered conclusive because they have a large number of associated biases. The lack of randomized clinical trials still does not justify the application being done in a completely safe way.
