Abstract: Learning theories seek to recognize the dynamics involved in the acts of teaching and learning, based on the recognition of human cognitive evolution, and try to explain the relationship between pre-existing knowledge and new knowledge. Objective: To describe learning theories and mention examples of their application in higher nursing education. Method: This is a reflective text that brings to light some of the main characteristics of learning theories and discusses their applicability in higher education in nursing. Results: After describing each learning theory and its main characteristics, we realized the influence of their guidelines on undergraduate teaching, specifically nursing, such as the use of the inverted classroom based on Vygotsky's theoretical references and the Nursing Process. Final considerations: In short, learning theories are shown to be the true foundations for the realization of the teaching and learning process, from the early grades through to graduation and beyond.
