Abstract: A new phase encryption system for images based on fractional Hartley transform (FrHT), random phase masks (RPMs) and truncation operations is proposed. In order to calculate FrHT faster and more efficiently, a new way of calculating FrHT is presented. The original image to be encrypted is phase-encoded, which increases the security of the encryption system as phase encryption is a non-linear operation. Also, other non-linear operations are used in encryption and decryption systems, such as amplitude and phase truncation operations of complex-valued images. The encryption and decryption system is protected by six keys, given by 2 RPMs, 2 fractional orders of the FrHT and 2 pseudorandom codes generated by the amplitude and phase truncation operations. These keys provide high security to the proposed security system against brute force attacks and the values of these keys must be correct in order to properly recover the original image in the decryption system. The proposed security system of this research is validated using computational simulations.
