Abstract: The study aims to clarify the concepts of mental health and maternal mental health of mothers of atypical children in the context of mental health. Methodology: A narrative literature review was conducted, covering different types of documents (articles, books, theses, dissertations, and online texts). Results and discussion: Health and mental health are complex concepts historically influenced by sociopolitical contexts and the evolution of health practices. A mother's mental health status affects the child's physical, emotional, and psychological development, and the stress experienced by mothers leads to illness and has a negative impact on family dynamics and the social context. Therefore, parental stress influences caregiving practices, making mothers more likely to be violent and neglectful, and to reinforce their children's behavioral problems. Conclusion: Motherhood demands a capacity from women that exceeds the resources their bodies and minds can offer. Therefore, when mothers experience exhaustion and overload, they are susceptible to developing maternal burnout.
