SAÚDE BUCAL E SISTÊMICA: O DESAFIO DO TABAGISMO E DOS CIGARROS ELETRÔNICOS
Essa revisão de literatura nos leva a uma reflexão sobre o desafio do tabagismo e das novas formas de adicção à nicotina através dos Dispositivos Eletrônicos de Liberação de Nicotina (ENDS), popularmente, chamados de cigarros eletrônicos (e-Cigs). Atualmente, há um aumento do uso indevido de ENDS, principalmente, em populações de jovens e adultos, tornando a saúde bucal e sistêmica ainda mais vulnerável. A trajetória histórica do tabaco demonstra o conflito de interesses inerente ao tabagismo. Também são apresentadas importantes políticas públicas nacionais e internacionais, enfatizando a relevância da Convenção-Quadro da Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) para o Controle do Tabaco no Brasil e no mundo. O impacto do tabagismo na saúde bucal e sistêmica é discutido, principalmente, os danos à saúde bucal pelas diferentes formas de tabaco existentes com ênfase nos cigarros eletrônicos. O texto também menciona que, apesar da proibição da comercialização dos ENDS, infelizmente, trata-se de um mercado ilegal em expansão. O surgimento relativamente recente de diferentes dispositivos, os ENDS, ainda carece de informações a respeito de sua segurança de uso e possíveis consequências patológicas. A reflexão sobre a recente e atual pandemia de COVID 19 também é considerada como um desafio, especialmente em relação aos tabagistas, apresentando consequências extremamente prejudiciais à saúde e ao risco de vida. Por fim, este material de leitura enfatiza o papel essencial do cirurgião-dentista, como profissional da saúde, na prevenção e cessação do uso de tabaco tradicional e de suas novas formas.

Abstract:
This literature review leads us to a reflection on the challenge of smoking and the new forms of nicotine addiction through Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), popularly called electronic cigarettes (e-Cigs). Currently, there is an increase in the misuse of ENDS, especially in populations of young people and adults, making oral and systemic health even more vulnerable. The historical trajectory of tobacco demonstrates the conflict of interest inherent in smoking. Important national and international public policies are also presented, emphasizing the relevance of the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention for Tobacco Control in Brazil and worldwide. The impact of smoking on oral and systemic health is discussed, mainly, the damage to oral health by the different forms of tobacco existing with emphasis on electronic cigarettes. The text also mentions that despite the ban on the marketing of ENDS, unfortunately, it is a growing illegal market. The relatively recent emergence of different devices, ENDS, still lacks information regarding their safety of use and possible pathological consequences. Reflection on the recent and current pandemic of COVID 19 is also considered a challenge, especially in relation to smokers, with extremely harmful consequences to health and to the risk of life. Finally, this reading material emphasizes the essential role of the dental surgeon, as a health professional, in preventing and ceasing the use of traditional tobacco and its new forms.
