Abstract: The pressure on water resources resulting from population and economic growth, combined with the increasing degradation of the environment, is broadening global discussions about the challenges of achieving sustainable development. Recent research shows that sewage collection and treatment covers 61.4% of the urban population in Brazil. However, not all the sewage collected is treated. In the municipality of Blumenau (SC) this is no different, as 51% of the population does not even have sewage collection. From this perspective, this paper analyzes the basic sanitation situation in the municipality, using a qualitative methodology, based on exploratory and descriptive research using information gathered from the main governmental and non-governmental institutions that deal with basic sanitation in Brazil. The results show that the challenges lie in bureaucracy, lack of information for the population and indifference on the part of those in power.
