Abstract: The general objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between professions and the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Maranhão during 2020 and 2021, aiming to understand the impact of occupational characteristics on the transmission of the virus. The methodology adopted combined the quantitative analysis of secondary data provided by the Maranhão COVID-19 notification system with qualitative interviews with health professionals and representatives of the most affected professional categories. Descriptive statistics and regression tests were used to quantify and analyze the incidence of cases by profession, while the interviews helped to explore the experiences and perceptions of workers regarding the safety measures adopted. The discussion of the results confirmed that professions that involve greater physical contact and face-to-face contact recorded a higher number of cases, evidencing flaws in the protective measures and public policies implemented. The conclusion of the study points to the need for more robust and specific occupational health policies capable of effectively protecting workers in future health crises. It is also suggested that future studies be carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of public health interventions and policies adapted to the realities of different professional categories.
