Abstract: Plastic has become a serious environmental problem, caused by excessive consumption, which leads to unbridled production, combined with inadequate disposal of its waste and few recycling alternatives. In view of this, this study aims to conduct a literature review on plastic, starting with production, through use and ending with disposal. The study consists of a literature review and data collection was carried out through electronic searches on official and academic websites, using articles published from 2014 to 2024 as inclusion criteria, meta-analysis, abstracts and conference proceedings were excluded. It was evidenced that plastic production has grown exponentially since 1950, starting with 2 million tons produced in the first year, currently reaching the mark of more than 400 million tons produced annually worldwide. These figures serve as a warning and invite us to become aware, to understand that the unbridled consumption of plastics can cost us our very survival, in addition to putting future generations at risk. One of the biggest concerns is with single-use plastics, the so-called disposable plastics. It is worth noting that Brazil occupies a negative position on the world stage, ranking fourth in the production of plastic waste. The two largest producers are the great world powers, the United States and China, while India ranks third. After this analysis, we conclude that, in order to minimize the problem caused by plastic, joint action is necessary, through the reduction of production, reduction of consumption and the creation of more options for safe disposal.
