Abstract: Human aging can be understood as a complex and multidimensional process. With the techno-scientific evolution, it has been noticed, more and more, an increase in the number of elderly people worldwide. This process is the result, among other factors, of the reduction in the birth rate, the increase in the life expectancy of the population and the transformations in the composition of families. Some theories are proposed to explain the origin of the aging phenomenon, each one with a set of concepts, facts and indicators. There are several particularities associated with aging which, in some situations, lead elderly people to Long Stay Institutions for the Elderly. Such institutions are regulated by the National Health Surveillance Agency and are characterized as public or private places, which aim to provide housing, food, help with daily activities and care provided by health professionals. In this sense, the theoretical context presented here proposes to the reader reflection on aspects related to the human aging process, as well as on long-stay institutions for the elderly, contributing with subsidies for the continuity of discussions on the subject.
