Abstract: Viral hepatitis presents a condition that can be asymptomatic and induce changes in the liver, commonly manifesting as types A, B, and C. Moreover, coinfection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) makes hepatitis more aggressive, requiring special attention to prevent hepatic complications. The aim of this study was to present an overview of cases of hepatitis B and C in the elderly population in the city of Natal, correlating them with HIV infection. According to the epidemiological bulletins from the municipal health department of Natal-RN for the years 2020 and 2022, regarding cases of viral hepatitis B and C in the elderly population, it is observed that the most affected demographic is men aged 40 to 69 years, with the clinical classification with the highest incidence of reported cases in the municipality being hepatitis C. The data also highlight that hepatitis infections have a significant impact on public health and result in a high mortality rate, especially when associated with HIV. Although the Brazilian healthcare system has adopted measures to address the problem, including the free provision of hepatitis B vaccination and facilitated access to treatment, vaccine coverage among the elderly remains unsatisfactory. Furthermore, hepatitis C still lacks a vaccine, necessitating other preventive approaches. The increase in cases of hepatitis B and C in the elderly and their correlation with HIV underscore the importance of epidemiological surveillance, prevention, and appropriate treatment, as well as the promotion and awareness of the population to improve access to healthcare services, aiming to reduce cases and complications related to these infections.
