Abstract: Pereskia aculeata Miller, commonly known as ora-pro-nóbis, is native to South America. Its succulent leaves are rich in protein, often referred to as "vegetable meat," and represent a promising option for addressing food insecurity. This species has increasingly gained attention as a valuable source of nutritional resources and bioactive compounds. The growing scientific interest in P. aculeata is justified by its potential applications in diverse fields, ranging from human nutrition to the production of pharmaceutical ingredients. This necessitates further in-depth research into its characteristics and appropriate agronomic management to maximize productivity. Beyond its nutritional value, ora-pro-nóbis exhibits remarkable pharmacological properties. Studies have demonstrated the presence of compounds with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities. Despite its considerable potential, commercial-scale production of ora-pro-nóbis still faces agronomic challenges that require further investigation. The lack of information regarding crop management, propagation methods, optimal cultivation practices, and the most productive varieties hinders its full exploitation. Therefore, research is essential to improve yield, nutritional quality, and the concentration of bioactive compounds, considering factors such as soil type, irrigation, plant spacing, and fertilization. Thus, the objective of this literature review is to highlight the relevance and potential of research on this species.
