Abstract: Contextualization in teaching is recommended by the National Curriculum Guidelines for Basic Education, putting the student as the protagonist and inserting theirs reality in order to facilitate the learning process. In this work, developed during the pedagogical residency at the Federal Institute of São Paulo – Campus São José dos Campos, the theme used as a tool for teaching chemistry to first-year high school students was essential oils. The regency, carried out remotely, was based in the first bimester of the State of São Paulo curriculum for the first year of high school. All the chemistry theaching was associated of theme proposed: essential oils, which contributed to student participation and was extremely important in theirs significant learning.
