Abstract: Student Assistance is an instrument that enables the right to higher education for students in situations of socioeconomic vulnerability. However, as Public Policy it is permeated by the contradictions of the capitalist system and the counter-reforms of the Brazilian State. Being a field saturated with mediations, it is also a socio-occupational space for Social Workers. Therefore, based on these premises, we seek here to analyze the possibilities and limits present in the field of professional instrumentality in Social Work. We used historical-dialectical materialism as a research method, based on a bibliographical analysis, in this critical field, and documents about federal student assistance and professional duties and skills. Therefore, we reinforce the point that the more enriched (in critical-dialectic rationality) the professional instrumentality and relative autonomy of the Social Worker, the more are the possibilities of a professional intervention linked to the professional ethical-political project.
