O CAFÉ RUY E O RECIFE DA SEGUNDA METADE DO SÉCULO XIX
Em meados do século XIX, a cidade do Recife crescia e desejava se “civilizar”. Este processo de modificações estruturais e mudanças econômicas, políticas, sociais e culturais foi acompanhado pelo surgimento de algumas inovações, a exemplo do surgimento de cafés que, ao longo dos anos, se transformaram em importantes espaços de convivialidades. O Café Ruy foi um dos mais importantes deles, local onde as sociabilidades de homens de diferentes origens sociais eram atreladas à apreciação de pratos e bebidas. O estudo desse espaço gastronômico ajuda a entender um Recife para além das famosas “lutas libertárias”, como já se escreveu, mas, sobretudo, uma cidade que crescia e procurava oferecer novos hábitos, imitando os europeus.

Abstract:
In the middle of the 19th century, the city of Recife was growing and wanted to “civilize” itself. This process of structural, economic, political, social and cultural changes was accompanied by the emergence of some innovations, such as the new cafes that, over the years, have become important spaces for socializing. The “Café Ruy” was one of the most important of them, a place where the sociability of men from different social backgrounds was linked to the appreciation of dishes and drinks. The study of this gastronomic space helps to understand the Recife beyond the famous “libertarian struggles”, as has already been written, but, above all, a city that grew and tried to offer new habits, imitating Europeans.
