Abstract: Issues linked to sanitation conditions, the organization of social space, geospatial formations, as well as public health are an integral part of the socio-environmental problems of the urban environment. In Brazil, populations with precarious socioeconomic support survive on the outskirts in undignified conditions, especially with regard to infrastructure and sanitation. The article contributes to strengthening environmental sanitation as part of the public health agenda, necessary to combat socio-environmental vulnerabilities. The objective is to understand the regulatory responsibilities of sanitation as an agent that promotes the quality of human and environmental life in urban environments. Methodologically, it is quantitative and qualitative in nature, with an exploratory approach. A bibliographic and documentary survey was carried out between January and May 2020, for theoretical support and understanding of basic sanitation, environmental management, socio-environmental vulnerabilities and urbanism. Environmental sanitation continues to be among the least favored by urban and environmental public policies, including in coastal metropolises. This reduced attention makes urban problems even more complex. Treating sanitation in an urban context full of socio-environmental vulnerabilities poses a challenge, which requires the recognition of the most diverse spectrums of analysis, considering environmental, economic, structural and social dimensions in an integrated and priority way. It is urgent to strengthen environmental sanitation as an integral part of the public health agenda, given that in a health-disease cycle, sanitation acts to prevent diseases and promote a higher quality of human and environmental life.
