  • Abstract:

I have been able to admire the way Nelly Decarolis worked and carried on an extense academic and scientific labor of the theory of museology in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Nelly Decarolis from Argentine, together with Tereza Scheiner from Brasil, in 1989, created the Regional Sub Committee of Museology ICOFOM LAM, today renamed ICOFOM LAC, with the aim to awaken in our Region the interest to know more about the theory that must be behind a Museum practice. Both Nelly and Tereza together with various colleagues of the Region developed activities that could motivate among Museum professionals and also Museum workers to think and to write about what they thought of Museum theory.

Nelly was able to develop in our Region a spirit of interest about museological thinking and we can see these through the multiple meetings of ICOFOM LAM in our Region. Nelly Decarolis advice was you have to have a museological basis for a Museum practice.

Nelly Decarolis promoted inter regional dialogue among the specialists, museum people, in our Latin America and the Caribbean Region.

She contributed to make known in our Region the thoughts of international Museum theoricians. She collaborated to develop new thoughts, adaptations, new concepts, knowledges, according to our Museum life in our Region.

By editing, compiling and publishing Letters, Declarations and Manifestos of ICOFOM LAM, today LAC, she was able to see that many museum workers be interested for theorical aspects of museum work.  Today we can see this continues interest for museology.

Nelly Decarolis in one of her papers speaks about: “To talk about museums which contemplate the needs of young people, especially in urban centers, where there is great lost of cultural identity. Museums which can developed programs directed specially to marginal sectors. Museums where there is not only venerated objects but is taken account their meanings. Museums which be the pilars of our identity   recharged with future aims.
