Abstract: Title Model of theoretical sessions: strategy to unify theory and medical practice in search of insertion of medical students in the scope of bariatric and metabolic surgery. Objective: To present the session model of the Academic League of Clinical-Surgical Anatomy (LANACC) in partnership with the Obesity Treatment and Surgery Center (NTCO), as a way of expanding the knowledge of medical students regarding bariatric and metabolic surgery . Method: Every fortnight, LANACC members hold sessions that cover epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and the types of obesity treatments that currently exist. Bringing the most used surgical techniques, as well as their indications, contraindications and the most frequent postoperative complications for each one. These sessions take place in a class format, always using slides and the presence of NTCO bariatric surgeons, with preparation and presentation being the responsibility of the participants, that is, medical students from different semesters, which enables active construction of knowledge. In this case, the presence of surgeons is essential, and they are encouraged to interrupt presentations, make comments and instigate discussions about the surgical indication and the technique used. Results: After the fortnightly sessions, participants reported an increased ability and desire to delve deeper into the content covered. Thus, with more knowledge about the area, undergraduate students had the opportunity to bring the subject of obesity, along with associated clinical pathologies, into their academic experience, which was described by the introduction of the subject in daily discussions and in activities within the context of the league, such as in weekly sessions and during monitoring of the procedures studied, within the surgical center. In this context, the importance of surgeons' participation was confirmed by reports on the expansion of theoretical content, providing knowledge about what is done in daily medical practice, clarifying doubts and stimulating the transmission of knowledge through the student-teacher and theory-practice binomials. . Conclusion: Holding sessions that provide contact between an academic entity and professionals working in the area of bariatric and metabolic surgery, makes it possible to bring didactic content closer to the knowledge acquired in professional practice. This means that students, encouraged by the active learning model used, develop a comprehensive view of surgical procedures and understand obesity as a pathological process.
