Abstract: The increasing use of central nervous system stimulant medications, such as methylphenidate (MPH), attracts attention, especially in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This study aimed to analyze the relationship between individuals and MPH in the educational context, carrying out an integrative review of the scientific literature through a systematic search. The results of this research indicate that the use of MPH, when prescribed for the treatment of ADHD, demonstrates effectiveness. However, without a prescription and without an adequate diagnosis, its use lacks evidence regarding its effectiveness. Furthermore, it was observed that MPH is used for neuroenhancement in highly competitive academic contexts. This practice, especially among university students, reflects a growing phenomenon, associated with competitive academic environments, in which pressure to perform can influence the search for substances to improve concentration. The increase in production and consumption of MPH, being one of the most prescribed medications for ADHD, raises concerns about non-prescription use, especially among college students. This complex phenomenon not only has public health implications, but also raises ethical and legal questions, especially when obtained non-prescribed through friends. Faced with these challenges, deeper investigation is crucial to understand the implications of this non-prescribed use and develop effective strategies, especially in the academic context.
