METFORMINA: INDICAÇÕES ALÉM DA DIABETES MELLITUS TIPO 2
INTRODUÇÃO: O presente estudo tem como objetivo uma revisão de literatura sobre as indicações do uso terapêutico da metformina além do tratamento para diabetes mellitus tipo 2, com base em uma análise de artigos científicos sobre o tema. METODOLOGIA: Foi realizada uma pesquisa nos bancos de dados Scielo, Google Scholar, PubMed e Lilacs com os descritores “type 2 diabetes”, “indications”, “metformin”, “SOP”, e “therapeutic use” entre os anos 2008 e 2022 em língua inglesa, portuguesa e espanhola. RESULTADOS E DISCUSSÃO: Os resultados indicaram que apesar de ainda ter poucos estudos relacionados ao tema, a metformina pode ser eficaz em outras patologias além do diabetes mellitus tipo 2, como para a redução de peso, no tratamento da Síndrome do Ovário Policístico (SOP) , na esteatose hepática, bem como para a redução do risco relativo de desenvolvimento do carcinoma hepatocelular em cirróticos diabéticos e em pacientes diabéticos em uso de metformina, como também na redução de complicações cardiovasculares. CONCLUSÃO: A indicação terapêutica da metformina, portanto, inclui demais doenças além da diabetes mellitus, tendo em vista seu mecanismo de ação, o qual visa reduzir a produção hepática de glicose e aumentar a sensibilização da insulina.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: The main goal of this study is a literature revision about the indications for the therapeutic use of metformin in addition to the treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus, based on an analysis of scientific articles about the subject. METHODOLOGY: A research was conducted in the databases of PubMed, Lilacs and Scielo with the indicators “type 2 diabetes”, “indications”, “metformin”, “SOP” and “therapeutic use” between 2008 and 2022 in english, portuguese and spanish languages. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The results indicated that, although there are still few studies related to the subject, the indications for the use of metformin for diseases beyond type 2 diabetes mellitus shows great effectiveness, such as weight reduction, in the treatment of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and hepatic steatosis as well as to the reduction in the relative risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma in diabetic cirrhotics and in diabetic patients using metformin, along with the reduction of cardiovascular complications. CONCLUSION: Therefore, the therapeutic indication for the use of metformin includes other diseases beyond diabetes mellitus. This is taking in consideration its mechanism of action, which aims to reduce hepatic glucose production and increase insulin sensitization.
