• Abstract:

  The deep venous thrombosis is a serious situation

  characterized by formation of a blood clot (thrombus) in the deep veins of the legs

  that can hinder or block the passage of blood. The phlebography is the main way to

  diagnose thrombosis, but has some contra-indications. The present study aimed at

  describing through literature review of the harms and benefits of the use of phlebography

  in diagnosis in patients with deep venous thrombosis. Methodology: It is a literature

  review, where the quest by the texts was performed from the following keywords are

  indexed in DECs (Descriptors in Health Sciences): “PHLEBOGRAPHY”; “Benefits”;

  “harm” and “deep venous thrombosis,” on the platform BVS (Virtual Health Library)

  in temporal clipping of 2007 to 2018, published in Portuguese language and English.

  Results and Discussion: The deep venous thrombosis is a major cause of in- hospital

  deaths in the world and, paradoxically, the most preventable, one of the most widely

  used diagnosis is through the phlebography, which when carried out under appropriate

  conditions and by examiner enabled, allows an excellent evaluation of the deep venous

  system, Demonstrating the absence of dvt through the uniform distribution of the contrast

  in the veins and the presence of DVT by the failure of the vessel filling by contrast,

  determining the location and extension of the thrombus. However, it is an invasive

  examination and subject to some complications. Conclusions: The phlebography has

  been progressively replaced by non-invasive methods, initially plethysmography, and  more recently the ultrasound image
