Abstract: The text presents a reflection on the transformative role of public education based on the experience of the Integrated Program of Research, Teaching, and Extension (PIPEx), developed in municipal schools in Passira, a town in the interior of Pernambuco, Brazil. Inspired by the principles of Paulo Freire’s liberatory pedagogy, the work highlights how education can serve as a practice of freedom, fostering critical thinking, the appreciation of local knowledge, and the emancipation of individuals. In the face of structural limitations and unequal educational investment between regions, PIPEx seeks to bridge the gap between universities and public schools through playful, experimental, and dialogical pedagogical practices. By encouraging student agency, training teachers, and creatively utilizing available school spaces, the program strengthens the connection between theory and practice, contributing to a more meaningful, contextualized education committed to social transformation. The text reaffirms the public school as a space of resistance and hope, capable of nurturing dreams and expanding horizons, even in the face of adversity.
