Abstract: This article explores the dynamics and challenges of preschool education in multigrade classrooms, with a particular focus on the rural context of Colombia. Through a comprehensive literature review, the article reflects on pedagogical practices, factors influencing the learning of preschool children, and strategies that could enhance the quality of education in these classrooms. Additionally, it highlights the pivotal role of the rural school by delving into and understanding the dynamics emerging from constant interaction with students at different levels of basic and preschool education. It recognizes that multigrade classrooms should transcend the academic realm and integrate into the daily lives of students, especially concerning preschool-aged children. The extension of learning to various contexts allows them to construct new meanings based on what they have learned. The premise is to question curricular development in light of the concrete reality of students, aiming to establish a close connection between essential curricular knowledge and the social experience of students. This ensures complete educational trajectories in dispersed territories while striving to make educational processes relevant to pedagogical guidelines of provoking, accompanying, and caring. The article emphasizes not losing sight of competency development in the context of the goals of early education, within a classroom where the unitary teacher is challenged to meet educational expectations for six grades simultaneously.
