Abstract: This article, based on Araújo (2021; 2024; 2025), Humphrey (1976), Leite (1997), among others, offers a critical reflection on the reasons that justify reading modern novels, with particular emphasis on Ulysses by James Joyce. It is a bibliographic study grounded in the principles of Literary Theory and Criticism, especially Reception Aesthetics, which emphasizes the reader’s active role in meaning-making. The study aims to understand the interpretative challenges posed by narratives that break with traditional structures, such as the third-person narrator, and adopt innovative techniques, including stream of consciousness and interior monologue. The analysis draws on theorists of literary language and reception, as well as scholars dedicated to Joyce’s work. The goal is to contribute to a deeper understanding of modern fiction, highlighting its aesthetic relevance, its openness to multiple interpretations, and its capacity to disrupt classical narrative conventions.
