Abstract: At the end of 2019, China notified the World Health Organization (WHO) of the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. As a consequence of this, at the end of the first quarter of the following year, Mexico was forced to establish a health emergency, in which measures such as isolation, quarantine and social distancing were implemented, in order to counteract the virus. These measures had a negative impact on the economy of the Mexican population, since there was an economic crisis that brought with it a decrease in the employment rate, and therefore, a decrease in income in Mexican families, thus affecting a large part of the population. Aim. Analyze the impact of COVID-19 based on the family's economic status. Methodology. A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out on the impact that COVID-19 had on the economy of Mexican families, in a population of 50 active working people, residents of Pachuca de Soto-Hidalgo, who generated income before the pandemic. Results. Approximately 88% of the surveyed population belongs to the lower class, having a monthly salary of less than 11,343 pesos, and only 12% belongs to the middle class, with 0% belonging to the upper class. 26% of those surveyed lost their jobs during the pandemic, of which 40.9% became dependent on the financial support of a family member and 27.2% found another job. Of those who kept their jobs, only 44.7% had an income during the pandemic of 1,000 to 5,000 pesos per month, while the percentage of employees with incomes of less than 1,000 pesos per month increased to 15.8%. Conclusions. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the economy of the Mexican population, since in many cases jobs were lost and family income decreased. The population had to adapt to a new way of life; in serious cases, they had to stop consuming products from the basic basket due to rising prices. Economic income was affected due to additional expenses due to the pandemic, such as face masks, antibacterial gel, among other expenses that the population had not contemplated, however, they were totally necessary to be able to continue in the "New normal."
