HÁBITOS DE HIGIENE BUCAL DE IDOSOS ATENDIDOS EM SERVIÇO DE NEUROLOGIA
O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar
os hábitos de higiene bucal de idosos atendidos
por um serviço de neurologia. Os hábitos de
higiene bucal de 20 pacientes, com 60 anos
ou mais, foram identificados com base na
frequência, periodicidade e necessidade de
auxílio em relação à escovação bucal através
de questionário, bem como a utilização do fio
dental e enxaguante bucal. Houve uma redução
na frequência de escovação dos idosos de duas
ou três vezes ao dia, antes da internação, para
nunca (45,0%) ou para uma higiene irregular
(25,0%) pós-internação. Houve uma redução
na utilização de fio dental e enxaguatórios
bucais pelos idosos acamados, no entanto
a necessidade de ajuda para a higiene oral
aumentou. Conclui-se que os pacientes
avaliados apresentaram péssimos hábitos
de higiene bucal, os quais foram agravados
durante a internação hospitalar, sendo com
isso, essencial o papel do cuidador sobre a
higiene bucal desses indivíduos.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to
evaluate the oral hygiene habits of elderly
patients in a neurology service. Oral hygiene
habits of 20 patients, with 60 years or more,
were identified based on the frequency, timing
and need for assistance regarding oral brushing
in addition to use of dental floss and mouthwash
were also assessed by questionnaire. There
was a reduction in the frequency of brushing
during the hospitalization period of two or three
times a day before admission to never (45.0%)
or an irregular hygiene (25.0%) post - admission.
There was a reduction in the use of dental floss
and mouthwashes during the hospitalization
period, however the need for help to perform
oral brushing increased. It was concluded
that the evaluated patients had very bad oral
hygiene habits, which were aggravated during
hospitalization, and it is essential the caregiver
role on oral hygiene of these elderly people.
