Abstract: Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the regions with the highest levels of social inequality, where public space often becomes a setting for illegal activities and hotspots of insecurity, leading to phenomena such as agoraphobia, isolation, and the emergence of excluded, hostile, and disconnected areas, negatively impacting the quality of life of its inhabitants. This study analyzes the natural water edge in urban contexts marked by violence and socio-spatial segregation, as is the case of the Ecuadorian city of Durán. The objective of this research is to propose urban strategies for the spatial integration of its public spaces with the natural edge. The mixed-methods approach collects empirical information, publicly accessible maps, and an open survey. The findings reveal opportunities to enhance these natural resources through pedestrian mobility, connectivity, green areas, and physical and visual integration with the urban landscape.
