Abstract: Education is essential for people's lives. The school is the place that must listen to the voices of the community to direct a quality education with the aim of becoming students’ protagonists for a critical reflection of society with the possibility of transforming it. This article aims to promote discussions about the relevance of the manager's leadership in the development of actions that cover, mainly, the pedagogical and financial dimensions. The concepts of enacted and constructed autonomies are presented, discussing the school's challenge to build autonomy. For this, some readings were carried out contemplating a bibliography related to school management, as well as a questionnaire about democratic management was elaborated and applied at Escola Estadual Vicente de Fontes. Ten questionnaires were distributed and answered among the management team, the school council and the student union. This work is theoretically supported by Paro (2012), Luck (2009), Barroso (2006), Marques (2012) among others. It was found that there is democratic management in the researched school, through active collegiate and a switch that evidenced this, such as: collective construction of the Pedagogical Political Project, engagement of the school community in events, debates and discussions carried out by the administrative management in assembly, grounding in legislation, transparency in the use of financial resources, leadership of the manager and demonstration of autonomy.
