Abstract: Health literacy is defined as the ability to acquire and understand health information to make pertinent decisions about one's health. Assessing literacy levels among individuals determines the direction of interventions for different contexts, especially when skills are limited. However, there are challenges for the scientific community due to the variety of existing instruments and the need for a standard and universal tool. However, health literacy has been gaining space and visibility in public policy agendas, and strategically, implementing these policies based on the assumptions of health literacy enhances assertive access for users and improves the understanding of health information. It is worth mentioning that this analysis was carried out using a state-of-the-art narrative review, which is part of a master's thesis. This chapter aims to contextualize the foundations of health literacy and its aspects in public health. Therefore, the elements of literacy in public health are essential in health promotion, since individuals with adequate literacy tend to acquire healthier habits. It also provides people with empowerment and better management of their health, which has a direct impact on their health condition and especially on medication adherence.
