Abstract: Teacher training is one of the central pillars for consolidating the quality of Basic Education in Brazil, recognized as an indispensable element both in the initial stage and in continuing education throughout the career. This qualitative and bibliographical article, based on classical and contemporary references, as well as normative documents such as the LDB, the BNCC, and the PNE, analyzes the relevance of continuing education and the challenges faced by teachers in their pedagogical practice. The discussion highlights that the professional identity of teachers is constructed through a process, combining academic, practical, and experiential knowledge, and requires constant updating and critical reflection. However, the implementation of continuing education still faces significant obstacles, such as work overload, precarious teaching conditions, fragmented training programs, and the lack of consistent public policies. On the other hand, current trends indicate the importance of digital technologies, inclusive education, active methodologies, and socio-emotional competencies as essential dimensions of teacher training. It is concluded that strengthening continuing education requires investment in coordinated policies, professional development, and the creation of collaborative learning spaces, in order to ensure innovative, inclusive pedagogical practices committed to the democratization of education and the construction of a more just society.
