Abstract: Prescription errors are one of the main causes of iatrogenic reactions in companion animals in veterinary medicine. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the prescriptions of veterinarians during a residency program, with the purpose of listing iatrogenic preventive measures related to drug prescription. The prescriptions for dogs and cats of a university veterinary hospital were analyzed through a cross-sectional study. Data were compiled in Excel spreadsheets, quantified and described in absolute and relative frequency, with mean and standard deviation. The significance level adopted was 5%. A total of 406 prescriptions were evaluated, of which all had at least one error. The more expressive missing data was the total amount of drugs (n 259), incorrect acronyms and abbreviations (n=331), absence of pharmaceutical form (n=107) and concentration (n=71). The quality of the prescriptions of the hospital under study needs to be improved, so that medication failures are avoided and the process of health care for the animals becomes safer.
