Abstract: This study presents an analysis of mining production, highlighting its historical importance for the territories where it developed, having, to a greater or lesser extent, a presence in different regions of the Brazilian territory. With regard to the mining region of Minas Gerais, as well as in the municipality of Brumadinho, the introduction of mineral extraction activity is inserted in a context of progress associated with large industry and economic centrality. It is observed that from the 1930s onwards, large-scale mining, differentiating itself from the first cycle launched from the 18th century onwards in Colonial Brazil, was established in the Minas Gerais region, which until then was essentially rural and without industrial development. Urban centers of Minas Gerais. The ongoing research indicates that the activity of large-scale mineral extractive is characterized, for reasons that will be addressed throughout the text, by the construction of a mineral-dependency relationship. Thus, mineral dependence is characterized as the situation in which a given economy finds itself hostage to a model of growth in the results of the mineral sector in its territory. The objective of this work is to analyze the impacts that mining dependence has had on local economies, especially after the tragedy-crime that greatly affected a significant part of the territory of the state of Minas Gerais, surrounded by numerous mining companies and the possible alternatives sought. From the perspective of the economy and sustainable development, mainly in Brumadinho and neighboring areas. The analysis presented in this study was carried out based on secondary data research, bibliographic review, in addition to fieldwork carried out from 2019 to the present.
