Abstract:
Concomitant use of drugs is the
main factor involved in mutual interference
reactions of pharmacological and toxicological
actions and may result in numerous side effects
and even potentially dangerous. Patients with
dementia frequently use multiple medications,
since they have a high level of comorbidities. In
this way, they represent a group of great interest
in the study of potential drug-drug interactions.
This is a descriptive cross-sectional study which
aimed to identify the main potential drug-drug
interactions in institutionalized patient with
dementia, especially the contraindicated and/
or sever. Potential drug-drug interactions were
identified and classified using Medscape Drug
Interaction Checker® database. 155 interactions
were cataloged. Of these, 26 (16.78%) are
classified as severe, distributed among 30% of
the patients (n=15). Thirty (60%) patients had at
least one potential drug-drug interaction. Raising
awareness and interventions aimed at reducing
exposure and minimizing the risks associated
with potentially harmful drug combinations
are needed to ensure the best therapy for the
patient.
