Abstract: Coastal areas are essential for the conservation of faunal biodiversity, serving as sanctuaries for various species that rely on these environments for feeding, nesting, and resting. This study aimed to conduct a survey of bird species observed along the coastal zone of São Luís, the capital of the state of Maranhão, Brazil. The study area was the Espigão da Ponta d’Areia, which includes stretches of beach and mangrove. A total of 14 bird species were recorded (Pluvialis squatarola, Actitis macularia, Calidris pusilla, Estrilda astrild, Gelochelidon nilotica, Columbina passerina, Passer domesticus, Arenaria interpres, Egretta caerulea, Egretta thula, Eudocimus ruber, Numenius phaeopus, Tringa semipalmata, Charadrius semipalmatus), of which 64.3% were migratory and 35.7% resident. Approximately 71% of the species exhibited a carnivorous diet, primarily composed of aquatic invertebrates, indicating the area's ecological richness. These findings highlight the importance of the region for both local and global bird conservation and underscore the need for public policies to protect these zones in the face of increasing urban pressure.
