Abstract: This article aims to analyze the issue of the precariousness of sanitation services in substandard settlements in the state of São Paulo. The research provides updated data on sewage collection and treatment, as well as an overview of the evolution of the number of substandard settlements in the state. The proliferation of these settlements becomes an even greater problem when related to the difficulties in universalizing basic sanitation in these settlements, especially concerning sanitation services. This paper adopts a dialectical approach and a methodological procedure based on the technique of indirect documentation, using statistical sources from government agencies and exploring bibliographically works and research related to the topic. The results of this study reveal the challenges faced by the residents of these settlements regarding access to and quality of sanitation services. Furthermore, they point out that the increase in the number of substandard settlements in the municipalities of São Paulo is a concerning trend, directly related to the lack of access to decent housing and the precariousness of basic sanitation. The output of this study contributes to a better understanding of social disparities, shedding light on the inequalities present in basic sanitation conditions in peripheral communities. Additionally, it provides insights that can guide efforts aimed at improving these conditions and assisting the residents of these communities in overcoming the inherent difficulties of life in substandard settlements. This research emphasizes the need for more effective public policies and concrete actions to improve the quality of life of these vulnerable populations and promote access to sanitation services regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographical location.
