Abstract: The Department of Documentation and Culture (DDC) was a Municipal department, subordinate to the mayor of the capital of Pernambuco, which replaced the Directorate of Statistics and Propaganda and Tourism (DEPT) and was renamed the Directorate of Documentation and Culture in 1945. In 1953, during the administrative reform determined by Mayor José do Rego Maciel, the Directorate was renamed the Department of Documentation and Culture. The Department's services have undergone major changes, both in their functions and in their structure. The DDC managed to bring a new proposal to the city's cultural life, especially in less favored areas. Its cultural programs developed over many years led to the creation of popular libraries in peripheral neighborhoods of Recife; nightclubs, where it was possible to have access to classical and folk music; presentation of musical concerts and theatrical plays, most of the time in public squares; popular cinema and tourism that offered excursions at more affordable prices to the economically disadvantaged. Thus, the article aims to analyze and problematize the creation of the Department of Documentation and Culture and its importance for the development of public policies aimed at promoting culture and education in the city of Recife in the 1950s and 1960s.
