Abstract: The study addresses the increase in cases of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the consequent inclusion of students with ASD in regular and special education institutions. The research highlights the importance of Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) as an effective solution for students who do not use verbal language or face difficulties in this area. The central objective of the study is to examine the effectiveness of AAC approaches in supporting the educational progress of children with ASD, demonstrating their relevance and feasibility in the school context. The methodology used was descriptive, with data collection through bibliographical research and a qualitative approach, aiming to investigate the impact of AAC methods on the educational progress of these children. The article is divided into three parts: introduction to ASD and its levels of support, description of AAC as a field of study and intervention, and explanation of the Picture Exchange Communication System as a specific method for autistic people. As a result, AAC is evidenced as a therapeutic approach that facilitates functional communication and promotes effective educational methods, enabling educators to interact with students with communication difficulties, respecting the particularities of each student.
