Abstract: Students' emotional competencies are associated with good academic performance and physical and mental well-being. Therefore, developing these skills is one of the essential functions of formal education. Despite their importance, the emotional competencies of Colombian children have been scarcely investigated. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the socio-emotional skills of schoolchildren between 9 and 13 years old from Colombia. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 770 children using a Colombian validated version of the CDE-9-13. A high self-evaluation was found in all dimensions of emotional development. Students' emotional competencies are independent of gender; However, statistically significant differences were found in well-being, emotional autonomy and regulation according to the students´ age. Furthermore, positive and statistically significant correlations between all the dimensions studied were found, which suggests that improvement in one of the emotional competences could have a positive impact on the others. It is recommended to include socio-emotional training in elementary and secondary school and teacher training to promote the development of socio-emotional competencies of students and teachers.
