Abstract: This work presents a pedagogical proposal involving landscapes of investigation and mathematical modeling, having as object of study the prison population in Brazil. In the view of Critical Mathematics Education, investigative activities provide an inviting environment in which the student explores open questions, as opposed to traditional activities, based on mechanical and repetitive exercises. Mathematical modeling, in turn, provides students with situations that are part of their daily lives, which can be a way to awaken students' interest in mathematical topics, especially when using the technological resources currently available. Thus, this work aims to present a proposal that, in line with the ideas of Critical Mathematics Education, allows students to develop their critical and reflective skills, becoming more able to interpret and understand situations related to mathematics in their lives. In the proposal, the use of the "least squares method" stands out, an optimization technique that can be applied in various areas of knowledge, opening up possibilities for interdisciplinary work.
