Abstract: The municipalities of Macaíba and São Gonçalo do Amarante/RN have potential for the exploration of sand, clay, gravel, and crushed stone, due to the availability of these materials. However, production activities have great potential to cause environmental degradation. Therefore, the objective of this work is to present the characteristics of mining materials for immediate use in civil construction, which is essential for the extraction of these materials within the technical standards and pertinent legislation. For this purpose, the methodology consisted of consulting books, scientific articles, theses and maps related to the subject. In addition, field work to obtain data, which, with their integration and analysis, allowed the identification of the main problems that affect the environment in these areas. The geological context of this region is represented by recent coverage, sedimentary formations and crystalline basement. All extraction activities are exerting pressure on the environment, affecting local communities and contributing to the process of climate change. Financial Compensation for the Exploration of Mineral Resources (CFEM) as a compensatory tax is low in the municipalities. Nor will it guarantee sustainability, due to the low amounts collected and the negative legacy of environmental liabilities. It is recommended that management bodies at the various levels, federal, state and municipal, pay attention to effective monitoring. Due to the impacts resulting from activities and the uncontrolled attraction of people from different regions, this further increases the pressure on natural resources and worsens social problems in municipalities.
