• Abstract: Dog nutrition has become of great importance in veterinary medicine. This is due to the growth in the number of obese dogs and the role that these animals have started to play in recent years, becoming members of the family. Given this, this narrative literature review aims to evaluate the possible benefits of supplementation with nutraceuticals in the natural diet of obese dogs. Obesity is a chronic inflammatory disease capable of negatively affecting the body's homeostasis, resulting in various pathologies, such as heart and joint disorders, skin problems, an increase in the incidence of neoplasms, in addition to important metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus. The addition of nutraceuticals to the natural diet of these animals can help both in the prevention and treatment of canine obesity and its consequences, providing joint health, reducing cholesterol and blood glucose levels, in addition to intensifying weight loss while maintaining lean body mass. Although promising, studies in this area are still scarce and much of the information used is based on human literature. Therefore, more research is needed to validate nutraceutical supplementation combined with natural food as a new therapy for obesity in dogs.
