• Abstract:

  The objective of this article was to

  characterize the Areas of Permanent Preservation

  (APPs) present on the Litorânea Avenue, São

  Luís - MA; as well as the identification of the

  environmental aspects and impacts that exist

  in the place, paying attention to the legislation

  applicable to these areas. The methods used to

  carry out the study included literary, laboratory

  and in loco research. It also sought to evaluate

  the importance of the preservation of each of

  these ecosystems, pointing out changes caused

  by their damages. Among the APP’s cataloged

  are: dunes, restingas, mangrove and hills

  tops; where changes were identified in them,

  with a notable association with anthropogenic

  activities, which could cause considerable

  impacts to the ecological functioning of the site.

  In view of the above, it was verified the need

  to preserve and rationalize the use of the area

  by maintaining the natural resources through

  the supervision of the competent bodies and

  application of the laws in force associated with

  the coastal management guidelines.
