Abstract: Communities That Care (CTC) is an evidence-based, community-driven prevention system in which local leadership develops a preventive plan based on data regarding risk and protective factors among youth. An epidemiological study, part of the pilot implementation of CTC in Brazil, identified higher levels of psychoactive substance use among girls compared to boys. Employing a cross-sectional, descriptive-exploratory design and mixed methods, the study involved 326 youth from three schools in a pilot community, who completed the CTC Youth Survey. Descriptive statistics and association tests (Chi-square with Yates’ correction) were applied using SPSS and R programming language. Subsequently, focus groups with 26 students were conducted to qualitatively investigate the meanings attributed to the quantitative data. Thematic analysis enabled the identification of codes and themes related to drug use and gender influences. Results demonstrated the multifactorial dimension of increased drug use among female adolescents, influenced by relationships and family habits, the need for group belonging, social media influences, and emotional issues. The findings align with trends indicating changing consumption patterns among adolescents, underscoring the need for preventive plans to be aligned with contemporary challenges, particularly gender-related issues.
