Abstract: This article presents an analysis of the immersion of deaf viewers in the cinematographic narrative of the film Crisálida, a Brazilian short film that addresses deafness and deaf identity from a cultural perspective. The objective is to verify how assistive technologies, such as subtitling, audio description and sign language window, influence the understanding, identification and enjoyment of the film by the deaf public. The methodology consisted of applying questionnaires through social networks with six deaf people who watched the film with accessibility resources. The theoretical framework was based on the concepts of immersion (Ryan, 2001; Klimmt and Hartmann, 2006), narrative (Bal, 1997; Bordwell and Thompson, 2008), cinema (Aumont and Marie, 2003; Xavier, 2005), deafness (Skliar, 1998; Lodi and Lacerda, 2009) and assistive technologies (Damásio, 2010; Lima, 2014). The results showed that assistive technologies contribute to the immersion of deaf viewers, but can also generate distraction, confusion or disinterest, depending on the preference, level of fluency and identification of the audience with the film.
