Abstract: Medication administration is a fundamental activity in the professional practice of nurses, requiring rigor, attention, and technical knowledge. The occurrence of adverse events associated with medication can compromise patient safety, and it is essential that nursing professionals adopt preventive measures. This study aims to strengthen safety and prevent complications related to adverse events in medication administration. This is a literature review, produced from articles published between 2019 and 2024. To select the texts, a search was carried out on government websites and in the Scielo and Latindex databases. Twenty publications that addressed the study theme were considered. Nurses must be familiar with therapeutic effects, possible adverse reactions, drug interactions, and contraindications. This knowledge allows them to assess whether the patient's clinical condition is compatible with the prescribed therapy, as well as to recognize early signs of adverse reactions. Double checking is especially recommended, significantly reducing the possibility of errors. Nurses should feel encouraged to report errors and near-misses without fear of penalty, as these situations are opportunities for learning and continuous improvement. Constantly updating knowledge and sharing good practices contribute significantly to safe and effective performance.
