Abstract: Infant formula is the only recommended substitute for breast milk. Therefore, the reliability of the information contained on its packaging labels is essential for the safety and health of children. This study aimed to verify the information on labels and promotional materials of infant formulas sold in supermarkets in Vitória, Brazil, and Porto, Portugal. All products labeled as “infant formula” were considered. For evaluation, a checklist was used with classification into “compliant,” “non-compliant,” and “not applicable” based on RDCs Nº 43, 44, 45/ 2011, 259/2022, and Law Nº 217/2008. Possible commercial promotions were also examined. Data were tabulated and analyzed by frequency estimation. Non-compliance was observed across all evaluated items of the legislation in both Vitória (11%) and Porto (20.1%). Warnings regarding preparation and storage were among the most frequently non-compliant items in Vitória, with an average of 55.2% on labels. However, in Porto, more irregularities and the presence of commercial promotions were found in all supermarkets. Thus, consumers are negatively impacted by the labeling information of infant formulas, compromising food safety for children and highlighting the need for educational actions aimed at professionals who work directly with this audience, enabling more accurate guidance and promoting health.
