Abstract: This study aims to investigate the role of the pastor as a counselor in the construction and improvement of what involves the task of knowing how to care for and describe the principles of pastoral counseling with people with mental health problems. The research used a qualitative approach with an exploratory-descriptive character, through a bibliographic survey in the Scielo and Google Scholar databases. Mental health problems are the most frequent conditions and states among humanity in contemporary times. Their prevalence makes them one of the most challenging situations in today's society, thus 1 Acadêmica do Curso de Ciências Teológicas da Faculdade Boas Novas - FBN, e-mail: almeidakatiaadv@gmail.com 2 Mestre em Ciências da Religião pela Faculdade Unida de Vitória (UNIDA-ES). The research indicates how pastoral counseling can develop as a form of care for people with mental health problems. Counseling is, by nature, demand- driven. Like all other ministries, it is centered on Christ and guided by the Word, but counseling is typically carried out as a response to some problem area. Regular ministries of the Word are like gas stations and oil change centers—they fuel and maintain your vehicle. But when your vehicle breaks down, you take it to the repair shop. So too, Christians who benefit from the ministry of the Word each week do not routinely visit the pastor’s office until something is wrong in their lives. In self-initiated counseling, a sheep cried out to its shepherd for help. And the shepherd must show joy and readiness to care for this wounded sheep (1 Peter 5:2). The pastor must approach others with a tenderness that is grounded in love and patience (1 Thess. 5:14). This requires courage and skill. Both are developed in doing. We conclude that it is necessary to ascertain the main implications, influences, and characteristics of people with psychological problems in order to develop and perfect the task of knowing how to care.
