Abstract: Experimenting with skills and abilities during the academic period is of fundamental importance for the training process and expansion of the student's critical sense. Promoting the experience of activities in communities is essential in health courses, which must promote the inseparability between teaching, research and extension. Thanks to this recognition, this manuscript aimed to report the contributions of university extension in health in communities, and its use as a tool for student training in the Nursing course at the State University of Santa Cruz, through an experience report, addressing the formative journey of the first to the fourth semester of the course. The approach is qualitative based on a participant observational analysis. For these almost two years, perceptions of discovery of the university environment, physical and human structure and international prestige are brought; the discovery of the importance of Extension and its impacts on communities stands out; the experimentation of extramural work, involvement with a multidisciplinary and intercourse work team, participation in research work with a view to applying results in the field, and understanding of the role as a future nurse and the different care aimed at different audiences - especially the importance of carrying out all work aimed at interventionist actions for prophylaxis and control of parasitic diseases in communities. The activities experienced during the period are in line with the curricular guidelines of the Nursing course, certainly contributing to the formation of a professional, ethical, citizen profile committed to caring for the individual.
