Abstract: Anatomy is a scientific discipline that studies the structure and organization of living beings, providing a detailed understanding of the systems present in different species. Since the dawn of medicine in Mesopotamia and Egypt, anatomy has been central to medical investigations of the human body. During the Renaissance, the human body became central to the development of knowledge, being studied in detail by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Andreas Vesalius, whose work "De humani corporis fabrica" was essential to establish the foundations of this discipline. Currently, the study of anatomy with dissected cadavers has been the main tool in medical education, but new learning approaches have emerged, raising questions about the effectiveness of this traditional training. Teaching monitoring and the use of cadavers in education are valuable resources for training competent and aware health professionals. However, the scarcity of available cadavers and ethical and legal issues also affect anatomical practice. Body donation has been an alternative to supply the shortage of cadavers available for study. In Brazil, Law No. 8501 of 1992 supports the use of unclaimed cadavers for study, but challenges in obtaining these bodies persist. Living donation is also an option, but it still encounters resistance from families, highlighting the need for adjustments in legislation. Encouraging body donation is important for the advancement of science and to secure funding for medical and educational research.
